You can’t talk about TikTok in 2025 and not discuss the possibility of the platform being shut down or banned in the United States. Today, that seems less likely than it did toward the end of last year.

However, there are still some unknowns when it comes to TikTok and how things play out may shape how influencers and brands view the platform.


Below, we’ll look at the situation closer and examine the most likely scenarios moving forward. Just understand this issue is fluid and a lot can happen in the next few months to change the dynamics.

Where TikTok Stands In 2025

After a brief 24-hour shutdown due to a U.S. law ordering parent company ByteDance to divest, the platform came back online when the current administration in the U.S. enacted a 90-day extension for TikTok to find a suitable U.S. buyer.

However, the original terms of the ban are still in place, and if no deal can be made with a U.S. buyer, the ban will once again go into full effect.

So as things stand in early 2025, TikTok is allowed to run for the next 90 days starting January 19th. 

What Are The Options After 90 Days?

This is where things can get interesting and most of this is unknown at this point since no buyers have come forward with a deal and ByteDance has not announced any buyers.

However, several groups and investors have come forward and offered to partner with ByteDance or buy a share of TikTok. These include Elon Musk (owner of X), Larry Elison (Oracle), and several other prominent figures in the social media space.

There have also been rumors of a merger with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. But so far there has been no confirmation of those talks.

Part of the speculation of a merger with Meta was due to several Facebook options appearing within the TikTok app. However, those have been there for some time and there is currently no deal in place with Meta.

If a deal is made with Meta or any other investor group and then approved by the current administration, then TikTok will likely continue to operate normally in the near future. Changes may come due to the new ownership, but those will take some time. Due to the popularity and success of TikTok, the new partners or owners likely won’t want to make significant changes.

If a deal is not made, then we go back to square one and the original ban will go into effect after the 90-day period has ended. However, this seems unlikely as the current CEO of TikTok has expressed his intention to find a solution. Since he’s aware of the requirement to find a U.S. buyer or investor, that likely means a deal is more possible than not.

For brands and influencers, this means that business will likely continue as usual. However, it’s prudent to at least have some contingency in place if a shutdown does happen.

For brands, formulate a plan and strategy if you need to migrate from TikTok. Beyond just your own accounts, this also means any campaigns you’re planning in the future.

For influencers, create ways to stay in contact with your audience if a shutdown happens. You’ll likely migrate to another platform and you don’t want your audience to not be able to find you during the confusion.

Remember, millions of users will be shifting at once if a shutdown happens, so you want to have a plan already in place to avoid your message getting lost in all the noise.
